Buck Belue is a legend in the state of Georgia and a monumental figure at Valdosta High School. He held the state record for career passing yards with 5,214, which he accumulated as a four-year starter for the Wildcats. He also added 1,487 rushing yards and 87 total touchdowns throughout his career and was the 1977 Atlanta Journal-Constitution Class 3A Back of the Year. He went on to play both football and baseball at the University of Georgia. As a freshman on the baseball team, he had 56 hits and 45 RBIs. Belue had a career .356 batting average for the Bulldogs and became a second-round pick in the 1978 MLB Draft. He played two seasons of minor league baseball in the Montreal Expos organization. On the gridiron, Belue quarterbacked the Georgia Bulldogs to a 1980 National Championship title while passing for 1,314 yards and 11 touchdowns, both second in the SEC that year. He was named first-team All-SEC in 1981, completing a college career-best 60.6 percent of his passes for 1,603 yards and 12 touchdowns while adding 102 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Belue later played two seasons in the USFL with the Jacksonville Bulls and was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.
