John Davis was a four-year letterman for Gilmer High who played football and basketball for the Bobcats, graduating in 1983. He was named the team’s best defensive player in 1981 and was named team captain in 1982. Davis was named the 1982 Class 2A Lineman of the Year by the AJC and was named First-Team offensive line on the 20-year All-State team from 1966-86, published by the AJC in 1987. Davis took his talents to Georgia Tech where he was a four-year starter and was named First-Team All-American in 1985 by The Sporting News, and Second-Team All-American by the UPI in 1986. His contributions to Georgia Tech athletics earned him a place in the Institute’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991. He was selected by the Houston Oilers in the 11th round of the 1987 NFL Draft where he played until 1989 when he joined the Buffalo Bills. As a Bill, he was a member of four Super Bowl teams before retiring in 1994. In 1993, he was awarded the NFL’s Ed Block Courage Award which honors one player from each NFL team who makes a commitment to sportsmanship and courage. Outside of football, John and his wife, Hester Davis, helped the start of Georgia Mountains Hospice by starting the John Davis Golf Classic to benefit GMH raising over $1 million dollars to date.
