Lucius Sanford was a three-sport letterman in football, track, and basketball at West Fulton High. At Georgia Tech, Sanford was a four-year starter from 1974-1977. As a true freshman, he played for the Yellow Jackets and recorded 14 tackles in his debut against No. 1 ranked Notre Dame. Sanford finished his freshman season with 124 tackles, setting the freshman record that still stands today. He finished his career at Georgia Tech as its career leader in tackles (433) and led the Yellow Jackets in tackles for three consecutive seasons. Sanford was a three-time All-South Independent selection from 1974-1977 and earned First-Team All-American honors in 1977 from the AFCA and The Sporting News, as well as Second-Team accolades from the Associated Press. Sanford earned his degree in Industrial Management before he was selected in the fourth round of the 1978 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. In the NFL, he enjoyed a 10-year playing career, nine with the Bills and a season with the Cleveland Browns. Sanford was inducted into the Georgia Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 2001. Sanford is currently the Executive Director of the Letterwinner Association. He joined the Georgia Tech Athletic Association Staff in 1998 as Director of Student Life after a nine-year career in the financial industry.
